Barter By Sara Teasdale

Life has loveliness to sell,
All beautiful and splendid things,
Blue waves whitened on a cliff,
Soaring fire that sways and sings,
And children’s faces looking up
Holding wonder like a cup.

Life has loveliness to sell,
Music like a curve of gold,
Scent of pine trees in the rain,
Eyes that love you, arms that hold,
And for your spirit’s still delight,
Holy thoughts that star the night.

Spend all you have for loveliness,
Buy it and never count the cost;
For one white singing hour of peace
Count many a year of strife well lost,
And for a breath of ecstasy
Give all you have been, or could be.

My Thoughts

This is such a lovely inspiring poem, as Sara magnificently can convince any reader to ‘Barter’ their sorrows with the splendid things life has to offer and she instantly spawns happy thoughts in our minds.

She expresses that the world has so much to give us like the flowers, the trees, flaky waves, misty mountains, the juicy fruits, the animal wilderness… and much more..and that is why even the innocent-hearted children looks at life with great wonderment…

Other than the beautiful nature, she also wants us to remember about the rich culture we are gifted with, our families, dear friends and all those who care for us including the good spirit we have with in us. By pointing out all these precious things we have, she also wants us to realize, that we should be grateful for this great experience we own, and not to take it for granted…

I simply admire Sara’s noble thought- for wanting us to cherish this valuable time we have in this world and know how so fortunate we are.

‘Buy it and never count the cost’ – Well even if we tried, we can’t count the cost of what we are enjoying now because the price for all these things are Priceless! Especially the breath we take -‘And for a breath of ecstasy’..
